June 11th 2016:    A Guide to Ripped Jeans

Jeans are the hardest thing to shop for and the easiest thing to wear, meaning that the redundancy of wearing boring jeans is a pandemic in the US. What's fun about wearing the same jeans to a networking event as you would to the bar? Simple? Yes. Fun and tasteful? Not really.

Once upon a time, there was either A) A Rebellious fashion goer or B) A guy who had absolutely no idea what he was doing, he ripped his jeans purposely or on accident and decided to leave them that way. Now retailers and people across the world are buying or crafting DIY ripped jeans that add a 'bad boy' vibe to the wardrobe of today's average Joe.

Don't jump the gun and fill your cart up yet. Here's where most guys mess up: they buy jeans that either have holes that are too big and expose too much of their leg, or the hole-count is way too high.

A general guideline to go buy is that there should be no more than two and a half holes in your jeans. Anything less is acceptable, go above two and a half and you'd better know what you're doing. There should be two holes at the knee that expose about an inch of your knee (vertically) when you bend your knee. A small scrape at the thigh is a great finishing touch which makes up the last 'half' of your hole-count.

Ripped jeans are most effective with looks that you wouldn't wear on a date or when you want to make a first impression as a law-abiding citizen. Opt for chelsea boots that stack at the ankle for a streamline look, and invest in a few basic tees for the long summer ahead. In this look, I'm wearing jeans from Forever21 with stretch-fabric technology that allows for comfort and breathability. Hey, those are the first two things you want when only your knees and arms and breathing in an outfit. DJ Hargrave is a menswear blogger and founder of Tailor Made Style.
